Tools for Tots

Developed by Diana Henry, MS, OTR/L, Maureen Kane-Wineland, Phd, OT/L, and Susan Swindeman, OTR/L, it is filled with user friendly sensory strategies (tools) based on sensory integration (SI) principles to help your tot (toddler or preschooler) to engage and participate in day-to-day activities. Topics include engaging tots, touchy tots, sensitive ears, busy bees, spirited tots, social savvy, challenging changes, picky eater tidbits, tooth brush tamers, potty pleasers, beddie bye bliss, and more!
How do you use Tools for Tots?
When the question is asked, "Is it sensory or behavior?" reframe it by asking, "Are there sensory issues driving the behavior?" Some tots may also need a referral for a professional evaluation targeting SI functions and sensory processing issues. Consult with an occupational therapist that has expertise in SI for more information.
Why do you need Tools for Tots?
Tools for Tots offers a variety of strategies that can help make environments "sensory safe" for all. You will find 'tools' which enrich sensory experiences for tots whose nervous systems are challenged (e.g. sensory processing disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and learning disorders). However, using these strategies will encourage optimal development in B, even those who are typically developing. Use these sensory "tools" in all of your tot's natural environments and naturally occurring daily routines in your tot's home, child care center, early intervention program, or preschool.
